I saw on Al Jazeera TV today that one country, I think Saudi Arabia, declared force majeure following an Iranian strike on one of their refineries, thereby claiming to be released from contractual obligations to deliver specified quantities of oil to customers. This is a fairly extreme step.

The maritime insurance industry cancelled all policies for oil tankers near the war zone, because Big Insurance decided (correctly) that even one destroyed tanker would bankrupt the system. Since no tanker will move without insurance, global supply has been severely reduced, meaning prices at the pump will keep rising. If the war ended tonight, it will take Big Insurance months to analyze the risk of reinstating those policies, and meanwhile, no oil will ship.
I'd be shocked if we didn't see $10 gasoline by summer.
I know, right??? I hope I'm wrong about the gasoline prices, and maybe they won't get that high--but I saw a photo this morning of $8 gasoline in CA. I was really surprised to run across that maritime insurance cancellation item in my surfing of snore-inducing business news today, but it explains the gasoline price surge so well. Worse, if tankers can't move for lack of insurance, nothing will make them move, and insurers can take forever to decide to re-insure.
It’s true…in downtown LA, gas is OVER $8 gallon, elsewhere $5-6 is the current rate. Everyone I know here expect $10 gallon by May, maybe late April. This abhorrent shit show is on President Epstein, his corrupt administration, every person who voted for him AND every person who didn’t bother to vote Nov 2024.
While this is an interesrting footnote, I am not sure much would be different even if these "international" trades were regulated. The futures market responds to shit that people thinkjis going to happen in the future, and right now the future looks to be continued stoppage of 20% of international crude oil supply/ 5% OF U.S. crude oil supply. For such a large and rigid system (it takes months/years to make new supply in the best of cases), prices are going to go up - it is surprising that prices have not gone up more already - I guess the traders are expecting we will be cancelling our spring & summer vacations to reduce demand?? oil otherwise has relatively inelastic demand.
