Jesus, this is depressing.

Thanks Jonathan ... Even if its the fascination of a multi-car collision or train wreck, I force myself to pay attention to what christian fundamentalists are up to. Nice to have someone writing about it in addition to Jeff Sharlet, Daniel Miller, and Bradley Onishi.

For the same reason I can't stop listening to Miller's & Onishi's Straight White American Jesus.

I shared this with the Reed College alumni group as she's a fellow alumna. The school's unofficial motto is "Atheism, Communism, Free Love." I wonder if we can get a group together to fundraise for a primary challenger to her in 2026?

Yeah every demo in the state was pretty happy she flipped a long time republican district but the incumbent Jamie Herrera Beutler had been primaried out because she voted for impeachment. So she was running against a more right wing opponent and portrayed herself as a moderate. So her victory was more voting against him as opposed to voting for her. Not sure what can be done about it but if she’s going to be a DIno the least we can do is vote against her and make her drop the pretense.

But we can't have Joe Kent he is worse than this! I am so scared.

"In 2012, McMorris Rodgers said the reauthorized Violence Against Women Act shouldn’t include protections for LGBT people. “Those are side issues,” she said"

So....don't beat up women, but lesbians are fair game? Wtf

Totally respect your work on this specific topic for your substack! But as an atheist moderate in her district, the reason I knocked on doors and voted for her is because she is a moderate. I expect her to disagree with me on a lot of stuff. 🤷

Edit to add: this is a pretty purple district. When dems take back the house in 2 years I would bet there is a good chance this will be one loss to the republicans. If they put forward a moderate Republican like Herrera I think MGP will be toast. MGP might even be most successful by switching parties and pissing off the right for being too liberal next go around. And again, all due respect, I’m on a substack that focuses on specific issues and I get it, but MGP is kinda the best Democrat this mostly rural county is gonna find in this era, is my expectation.

No "But" necessary! This article isn't an argument for people to think one way or another about her. It's so that everyone can know and make their own decisions. Your decision to support her is your decision! Thanks for sharing the info, too. I'm sure readers will appreciate the context. I do!

Or she’ll just switch parties as many have already done. For some I think it was the plan from the beginning, and that’s some disgusting trickery.

Ugh. I'm in Oregon, but her ads were on tv all the time. It was kind of hard to tell what party she was running as.

Expand full comment

That's what is so concerning. It sounds like she may be one of those who changes party...maybe after the Dems take back the house? It's happened before.

Her two-time R opponent is an extremist. I agree with those who commented voters were motivated to vote against him rather than for her.

This article alone would end her political career if she were running in a bluer WA district. That said, it would strengthen her popularity in the red WA districts, such as Spokane, which is represented by her new friend, McMorris Rodgers.

When religious organizations lobby politicians - even if they call it “Bible study” - they are violating the law that governs nonprofit tax exemption. This is not a free speech issue: any organization can lobby. They simply cannot do it as without paying taxes on their income.

Capitol Ministries is an unethical organization led by a con artist.

Sounds like Mr. Drollinger has a god complex and Gluesenkamp Perez has always been a shapeshifting Manchin Democrat. I'm happy to have her counted with our caucus but I have no use for any of these apostates of actual Jesus-like behavior. An actual god would have smited them all long ago.

Just left a message for the useless “Democrat” and demanded she hold a press conference as to why she is basically working for Project 2025. Flood her office with calls!

It’s always disturbing to have someone telling us what Jesus wants. Is he writing letters, sending stone tablets, or is it just text messages?

Jesus doesn’t seem to be anywhere in their ideology

…fascism is not an ideology, it’s the way to take and hold power, religion was trump’s cover to get what he wanted and trump was cover for religion to get to power

White christian nationalism is the ideology and—you are right—it’s about power.

…you didn’t understand, but it’s ok, people in this country never do, it’s too complicated for them

I understand fascism just fine. I also understand the rest of the ideology you are presenting

…i do not “present” any ideology, im just stating the facts and observations from my long and eventful life, trump has no ideology behind - he wants power and religion use this sinner to get to power, so much for a fucking “ideology”

People yammer on about a (derp—just gotta keep that hilarious typo!) deep state controlling all the things, but these Christofascists are the true puppet masters, trying to move in secrecy. I want to know the names of the democrats taking part in these “studies” (indoctrinations). It all feels icky and like a major rejection of the separation of church and state. This separation is rapidly eroding, and we’ve got to prop it back up.

Please tell me someone who read this got into her town hall. It is a packed house. No one else getting in. Someone ask her about this. No zoom. But they are recording it. Let’s hope no edits.

Damn it. I didn't see the article until this afternoon and I just saw she had a town hall tonight at 5 dang. I would have SO went!

My rep. She's a huge disappointment and embarrassment to Vancouver Dems. Prides herself on straddling the line between the parties but she's really a Republican in Dem clothing. Better than maga nutter Joe Kent, whom she's run against twice, but basically just another Jaime Herrera Butler, Who has mentored her and passed on many of her staff to when MGP won the race in 2022
