Great interview! We need as a society to all get involved in the conversation about policing. It's easy to blame the police when grievous harm is done. They must be held accountable when that happens. But all of us who are, like me, white professional class liberal baby boomers that live in relatively segregated communities with decent schools, health care, and infrastructure, need to acknowledge our own role in the system.
For the past decades as we were moving through our teen and young adult years, we have been slowly defunding the schools, health care, and infrastructure in rural and many urban neighborhoods, through the tax policies we have supported and benefited from - itemized deductions for home mortgage interest, health and college savings accounts, etc. These are the root causes of violence and we have asked our police to bear the brunt of it and keep it contained and out of sight for us so we can pretend it doesn't exist.
So many great points made. I really appreciated the ones about the importance of training & civics education. IT MATTERS, all we do matters & I am so glad people like Jonathan & Michael are there for us! Omg (metaphorically, lol). 😅
When you come upon a police call for help and you see hundreds and hundreds of people screaming and pushing forward like a battlefront and you still stay in the fight, you are hero to the rest of us.
When you’ve done that and you get in front of authorities and explain your experience without the other hundreds of law-enforcement personnel, who were there (fighting for their lives as well) you were even more heroic
And you can refuse the title, but the rest of us are in awe and want your life to go well.
In my case, there’s a certain amount of old lady love for you as a young man.
You keep up the good work, keep your spirit up, and remember that SOME Americans will appreciate and remember you forever.
The non-voters have taken what we have here in this Nation for granted. They don't believe what they can see is happening. If they don't 'come around', it's gonna be a long desperate struggle to regain what we had.
I specifically listened today to hear potty mouth from you and Michael 🤣
Michael is a hero.
Michael, stay above those assholes.
We support you so much for what you’re doing. Thank you! And thank you for your service Mr Fanone.
It was difficult for me and still is trying to navigate and feel comfortable using social media
I mean, it's not what we're hard-wired for. I hear ya!
Great chat, guys!
Great book!!
Truly enjoyed this conversation! I have such respect for Michael and how much he went through on January 6 and after. Thanks for doing this, Jonathan!
Dumpster diving for candidates: Michael, you hit the nail on the head.
He is a hero for speaking out about it.
Thank you, Michael. Your insights into the makeup of law enforcement and their current work environment are invaluable.
